The Nepali-language film industry, is called Kollywood (or Kaliwood as an alternate spelling) in Nepal. The making of Nepali films is said to have begun with D. B. Pariyar'sSatya Harishchandra, which was the first Nepali language film to be shot. It was produced from Kolkata, India, and was released on September 14, 1951. Aama (meaning mother) was the first film produced in Nepal, and was released on October 7, 1964. It was produced by the Information Department of His Majesty's Government Of Nepal (now Government of Nepal). It was directed by Hira Singh Khatri and the lead actors were Shiva Shankar Manandhar and Bhuwan Thapa, who are regarded as the first actors in the history of the Nepali film industry. The first film to be produced under a private banner was Maitighar (meaning the birth home of a girl), which was released at the end of 1966 by Sumonanjali Films Pvt. Ltd. Although it was a Nepali movie, it had many Indians contributing toward the making of the film. Mala Sinha had the lead role, along with C P Lohani, whom she later married. It had special appearances of Sunil Dutt and comedian Rajendra Nath. Directed by B S Thapa and music scored by Jaidev, a veteran music maestro, it had Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and Manna Dey, all of them established Indian singers, doing the playback-singing along with the household names of Nepali music, like Narayan Gopal, Prem Dhoj Pradhan, C P Lohani, and Aruna Lama.

Then the government established the Royal Nepal Film Corporation in 1971. Mann Ko Bandh was the first film produced by the Corporation. Prakesh Thapa was the director of the film. Nati Kaji and Shiva Shankar were the music composers of the songs. Amber Gurung scored the background music. The film premiered in 1973 in Kathmandu. Mann Ko Bandh was followed by Kumari (the first Eastman color Nepali film) in 1977, Sindoor in 1980, and Jeevan Rekha in series. The success of these films opened up avenue for private parties to enter into filmmaking as industrial endeavor.

By 2006, as the situation in Nepal calmed down and with Maoists coming into mainstream politics, the Nepali film industry started to return to its previous state. Now, more and more films are being made and released. The production companies and those in the industry are enthusiastic about the country's new situation. The return of peace in the country has opened more venues for the shooting of the films, and the industry is seen to be making good use of this time to revive the image of the industry.

The Film Development Board (FDB) was established by the Government of Nepal for the development and promotion of the Nepali Film Industry. But recently it has not created an environment of supporting and also the promotion of different aspects of motion-picture production in Nepal. The Board is a liaison to facilitate the conceptualization, making, distribution, and exhibition of Nepali films nationally, it is not able to promote the films in the inter national market and the main thing is that this board is not serious enough to send Nepali films into the international market. It also attempts to bridge the gap between film entrepreneurship and government bureaucracy. However, the Board is bound to take care of interests of the people and support the interest for inspiring films from the common populace. The Board is a balance between the people at large, the government, and the process of filmmaking. It is, therefore, the safeguard of the interests of the people, the watchdog of the government, and the advocate of filmmakers.

The dhak dhak girl talks about Gulaab Gang, her struggles, friendships and more Madhuri Dixit-Nene made a comeback of sorts with Dedh Ishqiya and received rave reviews from the masses for her performances. Now she is all set for her next film, Gulaab Gang, which also stars Juhi Chawla. Bollywoodlife caught up with Madhuri recently and here is what she had to say… Dedh Ishqiya received rave reviews from the masses and critics alike. Now, you are all set for another women centric film, Gulaab Gang. Tell us about your experience while shooting for the film. Physically it was very challenging. There are many action sequences in the film which will make you go wow. To achieve all that, of course there were a lot of sweat, blood and bruises to go with it. But frankly, it was all worth it and I absolutely enjoyed it. We have seen the trailers and your character, Rajjo in the film seems to be similar to your character in Lajja and Mrityudand… Well, in Lajja and Mrityudand, I played the victim, who takes a stand in the end. While in Gulaab Gang, my character is not that of a victim, but of a crusader. Rajjo is empowered and wants to fight for social injustice, not only for women, but also for men. In the film we are seeing women struggling in their life, did you also had to struggle in real life to reach where you are today? Frankly, I never thought of becoming an actor, so I didn’t had to struggle to be an actor. My debut film, Abodh just walked into my house. And my parent’s didn’t want me to get into acting, but then people told us to meet the producers. So went to the office and met Barjatya ji and Raj Babu, and they were so genuine, that my parents told me ki ek film kar lo. So that’s how I entered the movies. It was a different journey for me. The struggle was to prove myself and to do best everytime, so that was the only struggle I had to face. Do you think women have a bigger role in the industry as compared to earlier times? Of course. There was a time in films when I never saw a female assistant director, camera person or make-up person. There were very few women directors who you could count on your fingers. Now there are so many women working in different aspects of filmmaking. There are talented women directors like Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. The sensibilities are changing. There is a myth that Bollywood heroines have a short shelf-life or they can’t get work post marriage, but you have managed to change that. How does that feel? Age is just a number according to me, talent is the same whether you are 10, 20 or 100. I think it gets better with age. I also don’t believe in the myth about married actresses. I think it is crazy. Sharmila Tagore worked after marriage, Rakhiji worked after marriage… Yes, some of them quit but that was their own decision. There were so many who did work. There are no hard and fast rules Juhi Chawla, your co-star in Gulaab Gang will be playing a negative role in the film. And it’s quite unusual as we have never seen shades of grey in any of her characters in her films. Are you also open to playing negative roles? Well, it depends on what kind of negative role it is. I want to play different roles. So yes, if there is something challenging, I would love to do it. You and Shahrukh Khan performed together recently at the Temptations Reloaded Tour in Malaysia. Are you both planning to come together on the silver screen yet again? Not as of now. Not even in the future? Let’s see. Kal kisne dekha hai. We have always seen how two competing heroines can’t be friends. What is your take on that? See I can’t really comment on this because personally I am not friends with most of the people. That is also because we didn’t had time to socialize because we had a choc-a-bloc schedule. So yes, I never had time to create friendships with anyone. Having said that I really respect all the people. Today if I meet anyone, say if I meet Anil (Kapoor), Aamir (Khan) or Shahrukh (Khan), that respect and fondness is there. And that’s the way it is. When compared to earlier times, the competition has increased a lot today… Competition is a very harsh word. Because everyone is doing what they do best. And it’s not like that only one person can dominate. If that would have been the case, we wouldn’t have seen Madhubalaji, Meena ji and Nargis ji working side by side and shining at the same time. You are known as the dancing queen. Who according to you is the dancing queen of today’s times? A lot of them. There is Katrina (Kaif), Priyanka (Chopra), Deepika (Padukone) among others. Deepika, specially danced really well in Nagade Sang Dhol song. I was impressed by Anushka (Sharma) in Band Baaja Baarat. Parineeti’s (Chopra) acting skills are really good. We have so much talent today. -

He is a UK based Model and Actor who was born in Dang district of Nepal in 1971. Although, he had started his acting/modeling career since 1996 from Nepal, his passion and destiny took him to UK in 1998. He started his modeling career in UK since 2004. Nowadays, he is actively working in acting field in UK. He has already done various roles in movies, music videos & commercial advertising on various projects. Let’s hear some more details from a promising star, Kumud Pant, while he gets up-close and personal with Bluzog. Where do you see yourself standing in the list of world famous models/actors? I see myself making much progress. Even though I haven’t had the opportunity to flourish that much like a well-established model/actor, I feel as though I am constantly growing and learning. Are you content with whatever you’ve achieved so far? Yes, I am very much in contentment with everything that I have achieved so far. I do have much yet to learn, but I plan on welcoming any further challenges with open arms. Born and raised in remote district of Nepal, how did you get that inspiration to step into the world stage? It has always been a dream of mine to model and act. I received an opportunity to move to UK from Nepal, and that was it. This is the world stage to me, and I am steadily fulfilling the dreams I had as a teenager. Describe briefly your incredible journey of a Nepali guy from Dang to a successful UK based model/actor. The journey began when I moved to Kathmandu in 1995. I started modeling/acting until I moved to UK in 1998. In 1996, I was featured in the front page of a Nepalese magazine called Satya Katha. As this magazine was a popular one in Nepal, with every new issue, I was receiving more recognition. I was actually the first model that was featured in the cover page of this magazine. In 1997, I started working for director Dinesh DC in his comedy show known as “Twakka Tukka”. I played different characters for 6-7 episodes in this show. Thereafter, I started working in Nepali movies. The first movie that I acted in was “Janma Janma” as the main protagonist’s friend. The next film I was featured in was “Chunauti” as Neil Kanthe. Then, I played the role of a villager in “Janma Bhumi”. I have also been featured in “Gothalo” as the main character’s friend. After moving to UK, I had to settle down a bit and work my way up. In 2004, I won 1st prize in Southeast London Model Competition. I received £500.00, a photo-shoot, interview, and publicity in magazines. In 2010, I was chosen among 17,000 people to participate in Next Model Competition. Among the 100 that were chosen along-side me, I was in top 50. There, I received the opportunity to cat walk, do live shows, fashion shows, photo-shoots, etc. I moved my focus to acting. In 2012, I played a small role of a business man in a bollywood movie “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”. Since then, I have been up to a lot. I try to keep myself busy with something new every day. Some projects that I have been a part of are also published in imdb: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5126893/ Which was your first major breakthrough? Was it in movies or modeling? My first major breakthrough was in 2004 when I won the 1st prize in Southeast London Model Competition. Who are you major inspirations? (As in other artists) Rajesh Hamal, Salman Khan and Tom Cruise You have worked on various projects in feature and short films, TV commercials, music videos. Any personal favorites? Why? An advertisement I did for BA transfer as a mini cab driver would have to be my personal favorite. This is because it was my first lead role, and I had much positive feedback on it. If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing? I would have probably stayed in my village as a farmer. How was your experience as an actor? Any memorable incident to share. My experience as an actor has been great so far. Very recently, I played the role of a fighter called Passa in a bollywood movie “The Englishtaan”. I fulfilled my role as the fighter; however, because of the rigidity of the role I was playing, my entire body ached for an entire week. This movie has not been released yet. If you were to choose between a modeling career and acting, what would you choose? Why? I would choose acting because of my experiences so far. Any comments on current political scenario of our country and its impact on entertainment sectors. As a country, we are constantly growing and making changes. We have been through much in the past few years. However, the political scenario has only worsened overtime. This has consequently leaded to an even worse entertainment sectors. I feel as though I could have possibly gone far even in Nepal, but coming here has changed it all. I have progressed much as well. Can we see you in Kollywood movies in near future? Very soon. Your favorite food. Quinoa seed with lentil soup. Any celebrity crushes? Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif Your best place to hang out. Home. Any upcoming projects. My friend is in the process of making a movie. He has offered me a lead role in this Hollywood film. Your style mantra. Classy. Your advice to wannabe actors/models of Nepal. Never give up. Live your life the way that you want to. Follow your dreams. - See more at: http://entertainment.bluzog.com/2013/08/02/kumund-pant-lined-up-for-hollywood-lead-role/#sthash.5Paf7gh0.dpuf

Another Arumima is debuting as an actress in the Nepali industry in ‘Kina Kina’, Arunima Lama. A lot of actresses debut in a lot of movies, but Arunima is special because she is debuting in director Ukesh Dahal’s movie. -
Ukesh is known for making Nepali movies in adult themes. His previous movie ‘Palpalma’ got an ‘A’ certificate and it had became a successful movie. In ‘Kina Kina’ Ukesh has features Rajesh Hamal in a role of an artists who does nude arts. After a long search of an actress who could do a nude scene, Arunima Lama was selected to feature in the movie. At first, Dahal told that the actress was a fiction character Dil Kumari Waiba from Mustang. But, later it was revealed that the actress is Arunima Lama.
In ‘Kina Kina’ Arumima sheds all her clothes in front of the artist Rajesh Hamal. The censor board has approve the scene in which Arunima has covered her parts by her hands and hair. Although the movie was refused to pass in its original form, the board has passed it after the film makers comply with the Board’s demands of reducing the durations of kiss scenes. The movie is going to be released in Shrawan last week. In addition to Rajesh and Arunima the movie also features Karishma Manandhar, Raj Timilsina, Sashi Khadka and others.
Showing body to gain media attraction is considered in general to be unsustainable in film industry; let’s hope, Arunima’s case will be different.
